Podcasts are an essential medium for filmmakers, pass it on… Imagine not having a website in the early 2000s, imagine not having a social media presence in the late 2010s, imagine not having a podcast in 2024. Unfortunately, many filmmakers don’t have to imagine this reality, but today, I want to change that. If you do not have a podcast, not only are you missing out on fun and self-expression, but you’re also leaving money, networking opportunities, brand growth and viewership on the table.
Hi! My name is Lauren LoGrasso. I am an Award-Winning Podcast host, executive producer, and coach, known for shows such as We Can Do Hard Things with Glennon Doyle, The goop Podcast, Unlocking Us with Brené Brown, Pulling The Thread with Elise Loehnen, and my own Multi-Webby Award-winning podcast, Unleash Your Inner Creative with Lauren LoGrasso.
Podcasting is one of my deepest passions and I want to share it with you! Today you’ll learn seven reasons why podcasts are a necessary pillar for any filmmaker’s brand in 2024.
Why Podcasting:
- Power of the Human Voice: The human voice fosters intimate connection, increasing brand trust and conversion. Listeners of your podcast become true fans and are more likely to convert to your work than fans from other mediums. In fact, according to Ad Results Media, 68% of consumers are more willing to consider a product or service after hearing about it on a podcast. That’s more than YouTube, social media, print media, live TV, or radio. Podcasts are the single best place for you to drive awareness to your film and brand. Building trust through genuine interaction is key to making sales and converting listeners into fans, investors, and viewers. You can also get ads on your podcast, which can help you make revenue and build partnerships with major companies. Wins all around!
- Increased Brand Awareness: Podcasts remind audiences of your brand’s story, values, and offerings. The transparency about your journey and brand values that you can share through a podcast helps you develop a dedicated clientele, fanbase, and viewership. Sharing on your podcasts brings fans along with you on your journey, making them more likely to view and even invest in you. It’s a deeper connection than social media alone can allow. When fans feel they know your brand, they’re more willing to stick with you on your career path and follow you from project to project.
- A Free Marketing Tool: One of the best-kept secrets in podcast monetization is selling your own products. Podcasts naturally integrate product mentions, courses, and of course, films, making it an organic part of the content and an easy way to share and monetize your work.
- Networking and Relationship Building: Podcasts are an exceptional tool for networking and relationship building. If there’s someone you want to meet to help you build your career, invite them on your podcast! They might not say yes to a random coffee, but they will probably be interested in telling their story on your podcast. If you do a good job with the interview, you will likely have a friend for life and a potential collaborator. At the very least, you will get to spend an hour learning from someone you admire, which is a huge win as an artist and entrepreneur.
- Content Creation Machine: Podcasts provide easy content to repurpose for other social media platforms and can help create future products like books and classes. Let’s say you do a few episodes about how to make a film as an indie filmmaker. You can easily repurpose the video content to your TikTok and Instagram without having to do any additional work or ideation. OR it could be the beginning of your new book or e-book. In the meantime, when you post or create a new product from what you discuss on your podcast, it also drives people back to your podcast–making it the ultimate cross-promotional tool.
- Become An Instant Expert in Your Field: In the olden days, you had to write a book to become a thought leader in your field. Now, you can gain thought leadership recognition through podcasting. It increases your credibility because the more places people can find a reliable example of your brand, the more likely they are to want to work with you and trust you. It’s also an easy way to start doing press–You can cite podcast episodes and interviews in your pitches to other shows/print media as topics you can come to talk about.
- Increased SEO and Traffic: A good podcast strategy boosts SEO and drives traffic to your website and therefore your film. As your podcast grows, so does the public’s confidence in your brand, and you as a filmmaker, improving your overall online presence.
