For those of you who have read my ‘Film Festivals & Looking After Your Mental Health’ E-Book, you’ll know that I encourage filmmakers to take of themselves when they enter the intense and emotionally draining – yet extremely rewarding – world of film festivals. These next few series of blogs will be written by trusted experts in the field of health and wellness and offer advice regarding how you can incorporate these alternative methods into your self-care routine. First up is a focus upon functional medicine written by Dr. Remina Panjwani.
Hi, my name is Dr. Remina Panjwani. I am a board-certified Internal Medicine Physician with a specialty in Functional Medicine. My journey in medicine began with a degree in Nutrition from UT Austin after serving in the military.
My philosophy is that I believe every human is unique and requires a personalized approach to thrive. The human body is more than organs and symptoms. It has the ability to heal itself and is influenced by mind, body and spirit. I take time to understand your journey, address root causes, and optimize your well-being. This is different from traditional medicinewhere you visit your primary care physician and receive a 15 minute visit with a bandage approach. If you’re feeling unwell, we get to the root cause and get you back into a functional state. If you’re in decent health but want to improve and age well, we can optimize your wellness. We can influence certain factors and age well through a personalized approach. We go through lifestyle factors such as sleep, nutrition, stress, movement, relationships, along with detailed labs to guide the personalized plan.
I emphasize the importance of community and empowering others, especially women. Collaborating with local businesses, such as Women In Film Dallas, I conduct wellness workshops that not only provide valuable information but also incorporate practical self-care practices like yoga, breathwork, meditation, and sound baths. This holistic approach reflects my commitment to fostering a healthier and more empowered community.
Specifically, having a balanced mind for creative individuals is the utmost importance as their livelihood depends on it. We live in a hectic society where our nervous system is constantly in a fight or flight mode (aka sympathetic nervous system). Creativity occurs in the rest and digest mode (aka parasympathetic nervous system). I enjoy empowering people with simple tools that tap into regulating the nervous system based on science. Modalities that influence the zen brain waves (aka theta brain waves), such as sound baths allow people to have a balanced nervous system out of the fight flight drive into the rest and creative zone. The sound frequency adjusts the chaotic brain waves into the theta waves. Breathwork is another modality that is accessible everywhere! When done correctly, it taps into the nervous system through the Vagus Nerve and results in a calmer and clearer mind. Perfect for filmmakers.
